My refusing to eat flesh occasioned an inconveniency, and I was frequently chided for my singularity, but, with this lighter repast, I made the greater progress, for greater clearness of head and quicker comprehension. Flesh eating is unprovoked murder. -- Ben Franklin

Dilemma!

Have you ever been mocked for eating a Vegan diet? Do you think that people are ignorant towards Vegans?

I have been in the military for four years and have had the luxury of eating in many different dining facilities around the world...joy! I have never been frowned upon like I was yesterday.
Dilemma numero uno- I was over excited to get off work yesterday after a super boring 12 hours of nothingness. When I mean nothingness I am not lying I watched Bruno twice and ended up buying over $125 worth of DVDs on amazon thanks to Black Friday. Anyways, I was graced with my normal PB&J for "Thanksgiving" dinner::side note:: I work night shift so I miss all the normal meals.::side note:: our usual tradition on Fridays is PT (physical training for all the non military folks, we tend to acronym everything) and after work we celebrate by going to the smoothie shop on the Emirate side of base. Thus being smoothie Friday I start my countdown 24 hours prior to my smoothie treat, I know a little pathetic that I get this excited about a smoothie and a veggie burger but trust me its worth all the hype. I wait for smoothie Friday every week, it’s like my daily....er weekly starbucks! I know my ADD kicks in and I get side tracked.... we left early from work to head to the smoothie place because we were all famished to get there and the dang place is closed!

I was ready for bed by this point, but the guys that I work with had plan B in mind so we headed to the next best thing base had to offer for eats- Windys. This is the army chow hall and they fix really great food, minus the girl that yells "ew" at me every time I'm in line because all I get is veggies. So we get there 15 minutes early and wait until the place opens. I'm excited cause the food smells delicious, hmmm that is until I step up to the order line and see 6 different types of hot wings, cheesy potatoes with bacon, corn dogs and pizza with burnt pepperoni and sausage on it. Not only did I miss thanksgiving, smoothie Friday and my sanity someone left out the fact that it was "wing" day on base. eissac eats: chips and an iced tea. I have come to the conclusion the military is not Vegan friendly.

Dilemma numero dos- Since my food choices aren't that exciting over here I've chosen to do online shopping. I first ordered some goodies from Vegan Essentials, and they were great. It took a little long for me to get my goods but really I'm not complaining! I was sooo excited to receive food that I could eat!nNormal food! Well here comes the dilemma, shipping to APO address is just like shipping to a stateside address although you do have to fill out a customs form. But APO address are actually considered states side addresses because they ship through New York, it's kind of complicated. Most companies are not APO friendly for some strange reason. This absolutely sucks being that the only way I can get most of my essentials- soap, food, music...blah blah... is through the mail. So I've been testing different Vegan food sites out because they all offer different goodies. So I thought I would give Food Fight Gorcery a try. I ordered my goods a week ago and have been emailing the company back and forth because they were out of some of the goodies I ordered. So finally today I get the confirmation email that they were sending my goodies!!! All I could say was "sooo hungry", 5 minutes later I get an email that says.... sorry eissac but we don't ship to APO. Oh these dilemmas, luckily they have websites that ship to a stateside address and then on to an APO...but I was still bummed its going to be some expensive goodies, but oh soo worth it. I will share my goodies as soon as they arrive. I know this poor blog needs some pictures.. styrofoam, PB&J's, and plastic utensils don't make for great food porn.
